We pick up our tale at the start of the third day. It was grey and overcast but no heavy rain was forecast. This was great news as today would be one of driving out to various points of interest and then wandering around them, taking as many pictures as possible. We woke the next morning to a stunning view across the city of Reykjavik. Its low-rise, colourfully roofed buildings were bathed in golden sunshine and framed by the Esja mountain to the North, it looked the quintessential Scandinavian city. Patches of grey cloud moved quickly across the sky, each propped up by a partial rainbow as the sunlight was scattered by the droplets of rain that fell beneath them. Iceland, home of the ash cloud and favoured destination of Mums everywhere, has long been an unfulfilled bucket-list location for would be visitors the world over. It’s got it all – active volcanoes, the northern lights, even a giant pool of geothermally heated, skin purifying sea water… with a bar!
